2. Day: Pergamum – Thyatira – Izmir (Breakfast – Dinner) |
After breakfast, we go to Bergama, which is actually called Bergama. of the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 1:11; 2:12]. Here you can see the impressive Acropolis, the steepest theater in the world, the famous medical center of classical times, Asklepion, the Altar of Zeus mentioned in the book of Revelation as the "Devil's Throne", the marble columns of the Temple of Trajan, and the world's foremost and equally famous Egyptian temple. We explore the Library, the long-standing rival to the Library of Alexandria in Alexandria. The volume richness is estimated at over 200,000. It inspired the invention of parchment.Then we continue our visit to Thyatira, now Akhisar, one of the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 1:11; 2:18-24; Acts 16:14]. It was a city famous for its purple dyes. We visit the basilica ruins and some architectural pieces from the Roman period. Lydia, a purple seller in Philippi, was from Thyatira.Before settling in the hotel in Izmir, Turkey's third largest city and the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 2:12-17]. 3. Day: Izmir – Sardis – Philadelphia – Laodicea – Hierapolis (Breakfast – Dinner) |
Early in the morning today, the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 1:11; 3:1-4], Sardis, now Sardis. This was the capital of the ancient Lydian kingdom in the 6th century BC, depicted as a dying church. We visit the Great Temple of Artemis and the restored gymnasium and the reconstructed Synagogue. We also see the last few meters of the royal Persian Road from Susa to Sardis, built by Cyrus the Great and the "golden" river Pactolus.Then we continue our journey to Philadelphia, another church of the Seven Churches of Asia, now called Alaşehir [Rev. 1:11; 3:7] and the only church that is not condemned. We see the remains of a brick-built Byzantine basilica with some high arches and some 11th-century frescoes. Keep visiting Laodicea. B.C. The city, which was founded on the Lycus Branch of the Menderes River, was named Laodicea in Lycus in order to distinguish it from other cities with similar names. Laodicea is the last of the seven churches. This city, which was the junction of two important roads, had an important commercial and logistics location. Visit the ancient city of Ephesus, including St. John's Basilica. The apostle Paul preached to the Ephesians and lived here for three years. This church also received a letter from him. We tour the magnificent ruins of this once great and important city, which was founded in the 10th century, where excavations are still ongoing.Walk through history along the long marble streets lined with wonderful public buildings, including the Scholastica Baths, the Library of Celsus, Hadrian's Temple, and the Theatre.
